Our Story
We spent a year, after his diagnosis, in regular weekly therapies before participating in a medical trial called IACQUIRE in Charleston, SC. This trial takes a more “intensive” approach to therapy than the programs we were seeing at home. It seemed like a lot of work on Bear and a huge commitment for our family, but we were desperate to do anything to help him progress. In just a few days, we saw our son boasting with confidence and learning he could push through to accomplish hard things! The difference was night and day.
We just knew that we had to keep building on that momentum, so we started searching for intensive-style therapies once we returned home. With our own eyes, we saw how successful this was for Bear, but we were surprised at the limited availability and awareness of these therapies in our area. We now travel from Augusta to Valdosta, GA, for Bear to receive intensive speech, occupational, and physical therapy, and the results we have seen amaze us! We are so proud of how far Bear has come and hopeful of where he will end up! We believe intensive-style therapies are critical to the success and quality of life for our kids.
Our goal is to bridge the gap of resources available, and the needs of these precious children, by spreading awareness and providing support to help your child have the best chance at success!
Hi! We’re the Burton’s and we’re so glad that you are here! Our son, Bear, was diagnosed with a Perinatal Stroke and Cerebral Palsy before his first birthday. The Bear Foundation was created by his grandparents, in honor of our journey and in hopes of being a resource for families like ours. This has been an incredibly challenging time for Bear and our family but we are so blessed to see God’s hand in all of it. He has pieced together bit by bit the perfect people at the perfect time and we have found therapies and resources that have been life-changing for us.
